Five for Friday :: My 5 Party Favorites

What makes a party so fabulous? Well, everyone having a great time of course! But from the design point of view, to get a party to look fantastic and put a smile on everyone’s face, these are a few of my favorite things that I feel every party should incorporate!

ONE :: First Impressions

Creating a warm, welcoming, and coordinated entry is key to a well styled party. It is your guest’s first impression of what the theme will be. You want to create a look that is begging them to open that door so they can see more! A bare door does nothing to get your party goer excited to walk in, so I love styling the front door or outside entry! Below are some of my favorite creative entries!

TWO :: Printables

Printables are so important to providing a cohesive and unique look to your party. From the invitation to the thank you notes and everything in between, they are able to tie all the details together. Adorable printables are a must because not only do they provide personalization for a party – which makes the guest of honor feel oh so special while making the host look like they went the extra mile – but the theme is carried throughout when using them with different items, like food, favors and games.

THREE :: Statement Desserts

Dessert is everyone’s favorite part of a party, so it is important that you make yours stand out! Whether you have a custom cake, unique cake pops, or cupcakes with adorable printables, it is a great idea to tie in your dessert. Everyone has different taste, so I always love the idea of providing two or three desserts for people to choose from. Plus, this gives you lots of room to be creative with cute desserts! Farm 1st Birthday Party   Part 2 {The Dessert Table}

We love the display of different desserts on this table: they compliment the farm theme and give guests adorable sweet options! (Source)

FOUR :: It is all about the linens

If I have to splurge on one item it’s a nice table linen! Sure, a plastic solid color tablecloth is easy for cleanup and there is no worrying about spills, but a statement linen adds so much more. Lovely tableware and adorable decorations need to be highlighted against a gorgeous setting! One of my favorite tablecloths in our packages in the tutu table linen, because it makes a statement and ties in the decor. Who doesn’t love a frilly, girly, tutu table?

FIVE :: Personalization for your guests

Personalizing the party for the birthday boy or girl makes them feel so special, as they should, but what about your guests? If possible, when throwing a smaller party, I love the idea of customizing favors. Most kids I know get so excited when they see their name on anything! One of my favorite favor ideas was a Superhero themed party we helped design. The mother made all of the children a personalized superhero cape. Talk about impressive! My daughter was lucky enough to receive one and still wears it! She will always have memory of the party when she puts on that cape.

Emily's mother made each personalized cape for a party favor!

Mother’s Day Celebration Trend :: Host a Tea Party

Mother’s Day is just a few weeks away. Do you have anything special planned? Start a new tradition with Mother’s Day this year and have a fun and fancy tea party! Here are a few ideas on how to host a Mother’s Day Tea party and help make the celebration entertaining for everyone! Remember..don’t make mom do any of the work, it’s her day! Enjoy!

1. Send Invites. Invite friends and family to celebrate all the special moms in your life with these super cute (and free!) printable invitations from Confetti Sunshine.

Vintage Tea Party Table Setting2. Set the Table: Dress up your table with a pretty pastel palette. If you have access to vintage tea cups and saucers, this is the occasion to use them! It will give an authentic feel to the celebration! This lovely table setting is from A Fabulous Fete.gallery imageIf you don’t want to risk using the good china (especially around little ones) these floral cups and plates are a fun and really adorable alternative! (And less cleanup!) This floral tableware shop is now available for purchase in our shop! (Source photo).

3. Plan the menu: The menu doesn’t have to be complicated. Just put out a selection of assorted finger sandwiches. These go wonderfully with tea. A cheese board and grapes will also compliment the sandwiches and work great as a nice light snack!

Mother'sDayTeaParty6For dessert, serve shortbread cookies, miniature pastries, like éclairs and petite fours. Use tiered trays and platters like this one above from Sugar and Charm as a lovely display for your desserts.

Oh-So-Very-Pretty-Earl-Grey-Cupcakes-29Combine tea in a dessert and what do you get? Early Grey Cupcakes! Oh So Very Pretty has the recipe for these yummy goodies.

And we can’t forget the most important part of the menu.. tea! Black tea is the traditional tea served but nowadays there are so many options! You can also offer green tea and herbal teas for your guests.

Besides tea, offer a Champagne punch or mimosas as well as a kid-friendly non-alcoholic punch to add more beverage options.

4. Get Dressed Up: Channel your inner child and have fun with it! Dress for the occasion – big hats and gloves in light and flowery prints, which are perfect for a tea party.

Have a wonderful Mother’s Day and happy hosting!

Spring Party Trend :: It’s a Fiesta!

I think most of us are finally getting to experience the gorgeous spring weather! It’s about time, right? This time of year is a fabulous time for any type of celebration – baby showers, bridal showers, and lots of birthday parties! A big trend we’ve been seeing recently that works for any of these parties? A fiesta theme! The explosion of bright colors just makes us so happy! Here are a few of the decor trends with this theme we have seen, and they are super easy to DIY!

how to set up your own taco bar1. A Taco Bar. Well first and foremost, what’s a fiesta without tacos?! Wedding Chicks has the details on how to get this “Make Your Own Taco Bar”, complete with a shopping list and all! Who’s hungry?

2. A Colorful Backdrop. Color, color, and more color! We love it! An easy fringe backdrop is perfect for photos, or hang it behind your dessert table to make a statement. Get the look with the super simple tutorial from Brit + Co.

3. Giant Balloons with Tassels. Large balloons with any kind of tassels are huge (no pun intended) right now. This takes it a step further by using a confetti filled balloon with bright fringe tassels, and really just makes you want to celebrate. (Source.)

DIY Tutorial: Colorful Tissue Fringe Garland4. Tissue Fringe Garland. When you picture a Fiesta, you imagine the gorgeous and sometimes intricate papel picado strung overhead. HWTM offers a DIY on how you can achieve a similar look by using fringe garland as an alternative. We love the look of papel picado but are all for a time and money saver, and this works great!

Dressing up utensils is a creative and easy way to add those special details to your party. And trust me, people notice! Bright and Cheerful Mexican Fiesta Birthday Party7. Colorful Tableware. This is a must! Straws, plates, napkins – all with lots of beautiful and bold color! Don’t be afraid to mix and match, that’s what makes the Fiesta so great! Use 3 or 4 main colors and spread them throughout. We love the use of color in this party from HWTM!

These parties look like so much fun, I may just have to find an excuse to throw one!

Peter Rabbit Themed Easter Party + Inspiration

I have always loved Peter Rabbit. Growing up I read all of the stories, and now that I have children of my own I get to read them the books before they go to bed. So it wasn’t a surprise that as soon as the Peter Rabbit products arrived in our shop, I knew I had the theme for my daughters annual Easter egg hunt! I hate to play favorites, as I do love all of our products, but I think these might be at the top of my list. The soft colors are beautiful and the illustrations on the paper products are so sweet and charming! Just perfect for any baby shower or first birthday – but they also worked quite nicely for our Easter Egg hunt!

This party was a huge success on all accounts: the kids had a great time searching for eggs and munching on desserts; I loved planning, hosting, and had a fabulous time socializing with my friends; and my husband was pleased since the whole party (including décor, food and entertainment) cost me only $250! That was for 24 people including 15 kids!  There is no greater satisfaction than seeing a lovely party come together that is also budget friendly!  So how do you get this look? I’m happy to share how I was able to do this so effortlessly and cost effectively!DSCN2430

Using tableware from the Undercover Hostess Shop, I bought 24 Peter Rabbit plates, 2 Peter Rabbit serving trays, a set of Peter Rabbit napkins,  a coordinating paper table linen (loved this as it looked high quality and was easy to clean up after), and 24 blue and white polka dot plates for the kids table. Decor Cost: $50.

DSCN2399DSCN2441Coincidentally a few weeks ago, I received several too-cute-for-words Peter Rabbit baby gifts after the birth of my second child. How perfect! I love being able to re-purpose items I already have! I also pulled from some of the Easter décor I had around the house (the ducks, rabbit, wood crate, etc.)

DSCN2445DSCN2437DSCN2397Below you can find some of the Peter Rabbit themed decorations:

Peter Rabbit stuffed bunny – Barnes & Noble
Peter Rabbit quilt (hung on wall) – Barnes & Noble
Peter Rabbit ABC Blocks – Barnes & Noble
Blue Peter Rabbit plate – Pottery Barn Kids

For kids, I always look to find something easy to prepare and serve. This time I made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in festive Easter shapes using my Easter themed cookie cutters. For sides, I filled three different snacks (cheese cubes, grapes and Annie’s Bunny Crackers) in plastic Easter eggs. The plastic Easter eggs were displayed in egg cartons that were from reused from the deviled eggs. It is really cute for presentation purposes, and it was very easy for the kids to just grab one and add it to their plate. The kids loved opening up the eggs to find out what was inside!DSCN2444DSCN2446DSCN2460For the adults, I wanted simple food that I could keep in the refrigerator and just set out after the egg hunt was over. I tend to have a habit of going overboard cooking, which means I don’t get to enjoy the party and I miss what it is all about. To ensure I was able to see my daughter take part in all the fun with her friends, I made most of the food the day before. I also bought appetizers from my local grocery store or Costco. The menu consisted of: chicken salad sandwiches (Costco), club sandwiches (homemade), salad (homemade), Italian meat rollups (Costco), caprese salad (homemade), deviled eggs (homemade), and fresh fruit (grocery store). Food Cost: $150.

DSCN2442DSCN2443DSCN2395I purchased mini cupcakes from my local grocery store, which were a steal at 36 for $10. DSCN2398DSCN2436 As a special dessert, I whipped up some very easy Rice Krispie treat nests. To make these all you need are Rice Krispie treats, green icing, and jelly beans.

The main event was the Easter Egg Hunt of course! I hid approximately 160 eggs in my house, which gave each child the opportunity to collect roughly 10 eggs. The plastic eggs were purchased from Wal-Mart ($2 for 48) and stuffed with candy, stickers, pennies, and small toys. The Dollar Store is also an easy and budget friendly option to find treats. Activities Cost: $30DSCN2457

This party was a blast, and am thrilled everyone had such a great time! The Peter Rabbit theme turned out even more adorable than I imagined. Now I am even contemplating using it for my son’s first birthday next year!

Love this party theme for yourself? Right now you can purchase select Peter Rabbit tableware, and even more specialty Peter Rabbit products are arriving in the shop next month! We will also be adding a Peter Rabbit Hostess Kit! Make sure to check back for you next baby shower, birthday party, or even for next Easter!

A Look Back: Designing a 30th Birthday Party

I was cleaning out my Google Drive when I came across these photos from about a little over a year ago. Before our company had formally launched, we started out by coordinating and planning parties for friends, family, and by word of mouth. Really, this was Erin’s forte. So when she was contacted by one of her good friend’s husbands to help throw a surprise 30th birthday for his wife, she was all in. It is always fun to come up with party themes and ideas, but to do it for someone you know makes it that much more exciting!

I thought it would be fun to share this celebration, to show a little bit of our beginnings and of course all of the lovely details!

The birthday girl’s husband rented out an event space and planned a special surprise 30th birthday dinner, inviting her closest friends. Erin’s job was to transform the space into something unique and modern, with a color palette of pink, gold, and black, all while highlighting the special event that it was – a 30th birthday! Now… for the details!

Untitled-19Since it was the big 3-0, that had to be on display in a super cute way. The sign itself was a canvas board. Painters tape and black paint was used to achieve the bold striped look. The gold “30” numbers were made out of fabric that were sewed then scrunched together. A hot glue gun was used to hold the numbers to the canvas board.AUntitled-20A photo backdrop was a must! The same gold fabric used in the numbers above was again scrunched and hung alongside various colors of ribbon. I think it turned out great!Untitled-4Untitled-17To accent the cake and desserts, a wrapped cake stand was made, using the colors of gold, black, and pink. These were just boxes wrapped with tissue paper, and accented with ribbon.Untitled-18Above the cake table was a glitter circle backdrop. A circle punch and glitter card stock were used to create the circles. These were then hot glued to black ribbon. Since the ribbon spun while it hung, these were made to be double-sided.Untitled-3Untitled-2Untitled-6Tables were set with pink and white ribbon as a runner, and used gold chargers as an accent. And can we please mention these napkin bows?! (A while back we posted a tutorial on how to make these yourself – check it out here.)Untitled-16Untitled-14Untitled-15One of my favorite details is the hanging photograph centerpiece. This was a bit more involved for a DIY, but totally worth it. Erin’s husband is extremely handy and made the structure out of steel pipe. She then spray painted it black and it was then suspended from black ribbon. Candles, pictures, and flowers were hung from the piping with clear fishing wire. Two of these were made so both tables had a centerpiece. Although it sounds labor intensive, the cost was low! Only about $25 to make each one.niti-cakeAll worth it and so much fun to put together a wonderful evening with friends and toasting a happy 30th to this beautiful lady!
